Privacy Policy

We keep your data simple, safe, and yours. Here's exactly what we collect, why, and how you can control it.

Last updated: August 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Benny List ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use bennylist.com and its services ("Service"). By using Benny List you agree to this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Account information

  • Name, email address, and password (hashed — never stored in plain text)
  • Profile photo (optional, uploaded by you)
  • Username (handle), birthday, and gender preference (optional)

Content you create

  • Wishlists, gift registries, and gift exchanges you create
  • Items, descriptions, prices, links, and images on those lists
  • Address book entries you add (private to your account)
  • Purchase receipts and messages left by gift-givers

Usage & analytics data

  • Basic server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited)
  • Analytics data about how you use the site (via Google Analytics)
  • When you click an affiliate or product link, our affiliate partners and networks may record click, device, and cookie data to attribute purchases
  • Errors and crash reports to help us fix bugs

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To create and maintain your account
  • To display your wishlists and registries to people you share them with
  • To send birthday reminder emails (if enabled in your preferences)
  • To send newsletters and feature announcements (if you opt in)
  • To process gift reservations and notify list owners
  • To measure site traffic and improve the Service and fix issues
  • To attribute purchases made through affiliate links so we can earn commissions

We do not sell your personal information for money, and we do not share your account details with third-party marketers for their own advertising. However, Benny List participates in affiliate programs: when you click certain product links, limited information (such as click, device, and cookie data) may be shared with affiliate networks and retailers to track whether a purchase results. Under some privacy laws — including California's CCPA/CPRA — this kind of data sharing may be considered a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, and you can opt out (see "Your California Privacy Rights" and "Affiliate Links & Advertising Disclosure" below).

3. What We Share and With Whom

We only share your information in these limited cases:

  • Public lists: If you mark a wishlist or registry as public, its contents are visible to anyone with the link. Your name and profile photo may appear on public lists.
  • Gift givers: When someone reserves or purchases a gift, the list owner can see who reserved it (or "Anonymous" if they chose that).
  • Contributors: People you invite as contributors to a list can view and add items to that list.
  • Affiliate networks & retailers: When you click an affiliate or product link (for example to Amazon, or to Etsy and other retailers via Rakuten Advertising), the network and retailer may receive click, cookie, and device information to attribute a resulting purchase to us. This is standard affiliate tracking and is governed by those companies' own privacy policies.
  • Service providers: We use trusted providers (such as analytics and hosting) that process data on our behalf to operate the Service.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of users.

4. Affiliate Links & Advertising Disclosure

Benny List is reader-supported. Many of the product links in our gift guides, picks, and curated lists are affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you — affiliate commissions never change the price you pay.

We participate in affiliate programs including the Amazon Associates Program, Etsy (via Rakuten Advertising), and other affiliate networks. These programs use cookies and tracking technologies — set by the network or retailer — to attribute purchases and credit us. We aim to feature products we genuinely believe are worth considering, regardless of commission.

5. Cookies, Tracking Technologies & Your Choices

Benny List uses cookies and similar technologies for:

  • Essential: an authentication token in your browser's local storage to keep you signed in, and minimal session cookies for security.
  • Analytics: we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site (for example, which pages are viewed).
  • Affiliate tracking: when you click an affiliate or product link, our affiliate partners and networks — including Amazon Associates, Etsy, and Rakuten Advertising — and their service providers may set cookies or use tracking technologies to attribute purchases. These are governed by those companies' own privacy policies.

Your choices

You can control or block cookies through your browser settings. We also honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal: if your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information where applicable, and we will not apply non-essential affiliate or analytics tracking for that visit.

6. Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to: know what personal information we collect and how we use it; request access to or deletion of your personal information; opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information; and not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

While we do not sell your personal information for money, our use of affiliate tracking may be considered "sharing" under California law. To opt out, you can either (a) enable Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser, which we honor automatically, or (b) email us at support@bennylist.com. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.

7. International Visitors (GDPR / UK GDPR)

Benny List is based in the United States. If you access the Service from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR, including the rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, port, and object to the processing of your personal data. Our legal bases for processing include your consent, performing the Service you request, and our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Service. Where required by law, non-essential cookies (such as analytics and affiliate tracking) are set only with your consent or can be controlled through your browser and GPC. To exercise your rights, contact support@bennylist.com.

8. Google OAuth

If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture solely to create or authenticate your Benny List account. We do not request access to your Google contacts, calendar, Drive, or any other Google services.

9. Your Address Book

Address book entries you create are private to your account only. They are never shared with other users, displayed publicly, or used for any purpose other than helping you manage shipping addresses for gift giving.

10. Data Retention

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your profile, wishlists, registries, exchanges, and address book entries are permanently removed. Some anonymized records (such as completed gift reservations) may be retained briefly for operational continuity before being purged.

11. Security

Passwords are hashed using industry-standard algorithms and never stored in plain text. We use HTTPS for all data in transit. While we take reasonable precautions, no system is perfectly secure — please use a strong, unique password for your account.

12. Children's Privacy

Benny List is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

13. Your Rights

You can, at any time:

  • Update your profile information from your account settings
  • Change your email preferences (birthday reminders, newsletter, feature updates)
  • Delete your account and all associated data from the Settings page
  • Opt out of affiliate/analytics tracking via your browser settings or GPC
  • Contact us to request a copy of your data or ask questions about how it's used

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll update the date at the top when we do. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
