Baby shower planning questions
How far in advance should you plan a baby shower?
Most baby showers are planned 6β8 weeks in advance. This gives enough time to book a venue if needed, design and mail invitations, collect RSVPs, and order supplies. The shower itself typically happens between 28β34 weeks of pregnancy β early enough that the guest of honor isn't too uncomfortable, but late enough to know the baby's sex if desired.
Who typically hosts a baby shower?
Traditionally, baby showers were hosted by close friends rather than family (to avoid the appearance of asking for gifts on one's own behalf). This tradition has largely relaxed β today, baby showers are frequently hosted by a sister, sister-in-law, mother, or a group of close friends and family members together. Co-hosting distributes the cost and planning effort, which is increasingly common.
How many people should you invite to a baby shower?
Most baby showers have 15β30 guests. Smaller showers (10β15) feel intimate and are easier to host at home. Larger showers (30β50+) typically require a private event space or restaurant. The right size depends on the parents-to-be's preference β some love a big celebration, others prefer something quiet and close.
What's a typical baby shower timeline on the day?
A common baby shower runs 2β3 hours: 30 minutes for guest arrival and mingling, 45 minutes for food, 30β45 minutes for games or activities, 30β45 minutes for gift opening, and 15 minutes for cake and closing. Not all showers include gift opening β some hosts have guests leave gifts to be opened privately, which keeps the pace moving and reduces awkwardness.
What should you not forget to do after a baby shower?
The most commonly forgotten post-shower task is sending thank-you notes in a timely manner. The standard is 2β3 weeks after the shower. Each note should be personal and mention the specific gift. It's also worth: sharing shower photos with the guest of honor, returning or exchanging duplicates, and using any registry completion discounts to purchase remaining needed items before the due date.
