Following safe sleep guidelines reduces SIDS risk significantly. These apply to every sleep โ€” naps and nights, at home and away.

Back to sleep, every sleep

Always place baby on their back for every nap and nighttime sleep โ€” even if they can roll over. This is the single most important SIDS prevention measure.

Firm, flat sleep surface

Baby should sleep on a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only. No pillows, blankets, bumpers, wedges, or positioners in the sleep space.

Room-sharing, not bed-sharing

The AAP recommends room-sharing (baby in their own safe sleep space in your room) for at least 6 months, ideally 12. This reduces SIDS risk by up to 50% without the hazards of bed-sharing.

Temperature matters

Keep the room between 68โ€“72ยฐF (20โ€“22ยฐC). Overheating is a SIDS risk factor. Use a sleep sack instead of loose blankets to keep baby warm.

No inclined sleepers

Rock 'n Plays and other inclined sleepers are not safe for unsupervised sleep. If baby falls asleep in a car seat or swing, transfer to a flat surface.
