Pregnancy week questions
What happens in each week of pregnancy?
Each week of pregnancy brings significant development โ in the first trimester, the embryo develops all essential organs; in the second trimester, the baby grows rapidly and begins moving; in the third trimester, the baby gains weight and all systems mature for life outside the womb. Our week-by-week tracker covers the key highlights for each week from week 4 through week 40.
When do you start showing in pregnancy?
Most first-time mothers start showing a noticeable bump between weeks 16โ20. Women who have been pregnant before often show earlier (weeks 14โ16) because the abdominal muscles are more relaxed. Body type, uterine position, and the number of babies all affect when the bump appears. Many women still look pregnant for weeks after giving birth.
When can you feel baby move?
First-time mothers typically feel baby's movements (quickening) between 18โ22 weeks. Women who have been pregnant before often notice movement earlier, around 16โ18 weeks. Baby movements feel like fluttering, bubbles, or gentle taps at first. By the third trimester, movements become strong enough that others can feel them by placing a hand on the belly.
What are the three trimesters of pregnancy?
The first trimester spans weeks 1โ12 (from last menstrual period), during which all the baby's major organs form. The second trimester spans weeks 13โ26, during which the baby grows rapidly and movement begins. The third trimester spans weeks 27โ40 (or until birth), during which the baby gains weight and all systems mature for birth.
What size is the baby each week of pregnancy?
Baby size is commonly compared to fruits and vegetables to make it relatable. At 6 weeks, baby is the size of a lentil. At 12 weeks, a lime. At 20 weeks, a banana. At 28 weeks, an eggplant. At 36 weeks, a head of romaine lettuce. At 40 weeks, a jackfruit. These comparisons are approximate โ actual fetal size varies by baby and measurement method.
