Hospital Bag Checklist

Pack your hospital bag by week 35–36 of pregnancy — about 4–5 weeks before your due date. Babies can arrive early, especially second pregnancies which tend to move faster. Having the bag ready by 36 weeks means you won't be throwing things together mid-contraction.

Pack 2–3 days of clothes for yourself and your partner. The average hospital stay is 1–2 days for a vaginal birth and 2–4 days for a C-section. Bring an extra set than you think you'll need — hospital stays often run longer than expected, and you'll want comfortable options.

Most hospitals provide diapers, wipes, pads, formula (if not breastfeeding), basic toiletries, and baby essentials for the stay. What they provide is functional but basic — you may prefer your own preferred brand of diapers or wipes. Ask your hospital what they supply so you know what to skip.

Skip: jewelry and valuables, expensive electronics (theft risk), elaborate outfits (you'll be in a gown most of the time), too many outfits for baby (the hospital will swaddle them most of the stay), and anything that can't be replaced. Travel light on the baby items — the hospital provides most of what you'll need during the stay.

Yes. Hospitals will not discharge a baby without a properly installed infant car seat. Have your car seat installed and inspected before your due date — many fire stations and hospitals offer free car seat inspections. Bring the car seat to the hospital on your way in (or have it in the car already).
